Deontay Wilder Wanted for Murder After Brutal One-Punch Knockout of Dominic Breazeale in 1st Round

Professional boxer Deontay Wilder has been accused of “first-degree murder” after he defeated his opponent Dominic Breazeale Saturday night (May 18) in the first round with a devastating knock out just two minutes into their fight.

Wilder made headlines last Tuesday (May 14) after he told reporters during a post-workout session that he planned “kill” Breazeale in the ring.

“[Breazeale’s] life is on the line for this fight and I do mean his life,” Wilder said. “I am still trying to get me a body on my record. Dominic Breazeale asked for this. I didn’t go seek him. He [sought] me. So, if it comes it comes. This is a brutal sport. This is not a gentleman sport.”

Wilder added: “At this particular time, we have bad blood against each other. This is the only sport where you can kill a man and get paid for it at the same time. It’s legal. So why not use my right to do so?”

And that’s exactly what Wilder did Saturday as he successfully defended his WBC title for the ninth time with a right hook that knocked Breazeale clean out, giving Wilder his 40th career KO in 42 contests.

Of course, Wilder didn’t literally kill Breazeale … but that didn’t stop boxing fans on Twitter from hurling murder accusations Wilder’s way for the brutal way in which he beat Breazeale, with many joking that Wilder’s punching power “should be illegal.”

Some people even pointed out that Wilder’s boxing record on his Wikipedia page had been updated to reflect Breazeale’s “murder.”

The Cast and Creators of Swamp Thing Discuss the Humanity and Horror of the Series

This weekend, the cast and creators of DC Universe’s Swamp Thing hosted a Q+A, where they screened the first two episodes of the series. Cast members included Andy Bean, Crystal Reed, Derek Mears, Virginia Madsen, Jennifer Beals, Ian Ziering, and more. While we’ll have a review for you later this week, suffice it to say that Swamp Thing is stylish and spooky horror series that may very well be DC Universe’s best show yet.

The series synopsis reads: “Swamp Thing follows Abby Arcane as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.”

Swamp Thing, created by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson, first appeared in House of Secrets #92 (July 1971). Since then, the character has spawned several successful comic book runs, two films, a live-action series, and an animated series. But there has never been a better time for a Swamp Thing series, given modern special effects and the more relevant than ever threat of climate change and environmental disaster.

Executive producer and showrunner Mark Verheiden (Hemlock Grove) discussed the vision for the show, which was developed along with fellow executive producer and horror auteur James Wan (Aquaman). Verheiden said, “When we started, we wanted to do a Swamp Thing that is true to the comics of Wein, Wrightson, and what Alan Moore and Steve Bissette did … We’re looking to create this world in Marais in which Abby Arcane comes into it with enormous amounts of problems and backstory that she has to deal with. And we also wanted to do a great horror show that is genuinely scary and R-rated at times.”

So much of the series is based on finding the humanity in Alec Holland/Swamp Thing, who is portrayed by Andy Bean (It: Chapter Two) in his human form and Derek Mears (Friday the 13th) in his swamp form. Both actors discussed how they approached the character, working together to create a cohesive performance.

Bean said of the role, “It was a bizarre thing going into it, knowing the work put into the human aspect, so when it turns into another thing, it matters. He wants to be human again, and what is it to be human? What is it to have connections with people spontaneously, and the potential for happiness? We went down the rabbit holes of what is it to cling onto that and have hope, yet be lost in it. I can’t wait for the world to see what Derek has done. I couldn’t be more happy to be side to side with him.”

Mears described the experience as a “crazy full circle”, as he grew up a fan of the comics. On working with Bean he said, “to work with someone so giving and loving, like Andy came to me early on and asked ‘what do you need for your side of this?’ and we had long conversations about existentialism and go down these crazy rabbit holes about consciousness and what it means to be who we are, everything that is you … when all of that is taken away, what’s left?”

And while Swamp Thing is the title character, much of the series centers on Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed), the CDC scientist who returns to her hometown, haunted by the tragedies of her past. Reed said of the role and her dynamic with Holland, “Abby is constantly searching for the humanity in the monster, and that is what makes her beautiful, as she’s constantly looking for the light in general.”

Swamp Thing is a very different superhero show than any we’ve seen before, and we’re excited to tell you more about it next week.

Sebastian Stan Discusses Bucky’s Future in the Upcoming Falcon & Winter Soldier Series

sebastian stan and anthony mackie as winter soldier and falcon.

SPOILER ALERT: Avengers: Endgame deets below, yada yada.

Sebastian Stan discussed the highly anticipated Falcon & Winter Soldier limited series while at a comic convention in Italy. The show, which will premiere on Disney+, begins shooting this fall, and the erstwhile Bucky Barnes had some thoughts on what fans could see from the Winter Soldier.

“I think it’s time for Bucky to go out there and have an identity outside of the circumstances that we’ve met him through … So, I don’t know, he might do all kinds of things. He might even go on a date. I don’t know. Scary world out there, you know? Apps, things like that. I don’t know what he’s gonna do. I can’t see him on an iPhone…I think it’s gonna be a lot of dealing with Anthony’s character and Anthony himself which is always another character.”

Despite appearing in six MCU films, we still know very little of the man inside the Winter Soldier. Aside from the Bucky that we meet in Captain America: The First Avenger, his entire character arc has been used to define Steve Rogers and humanize the various machinations of Hydra. Bucky has spent so much time under the thrall of Hydra, that we have only seen glimpses of who he has become.

But with the events of Endgame finished, as is his time healing in Wakanda, Bucky can finally re-enter the world and figure out his place. Of course, there’s plenty of source material to guide him, including the excellent Winter Soldier comic series from Kyle Higgins.

In addition, the series will be our first glimpse at Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) since Cap handed him the shield. Wilson is also a character whose internal life we have seen little of. We don’t know much about him besides he’s a veteran and support group leader. Like Bucky, Sam has largely functioned as a sounding board for Steve. Now that he’s the new Captain America, his character needs to be fleshed out.

Seeing Falcon and the Winter Soldier together has all the makings of a fascinating character study. After all, while both men are soldiers, they have wildly different personalities. The main thing holding them together is Steve Rogers, so it will be interesting to see what happens without Steve in the mix. But there will definitely be plenty of banter.

“I have a blast working with Anthony,” Stan said. “It’s very funny half the time. It’s just gonna be a lot of that move your seat up thing, I’m gonna tell him that if we’re gonna be in the car, I’m gonna be in the passenger’s seat and he’s gonna be in the back, or I should be in the driver’s seat.”

What are your hopes for the Falcon & Winter Soldier series? Mismatched buddy comedy, serious spy thriller, or perhaps a little bit of both? Share your feels in the comments!

Leslie Jones Taps Into Our Collective Anger Over the Alabama Abortion Ban

On the season finale of Saturday Night Live, Leslie Jones delivered a powerful and blisteringly funny rant on Alabama’s abortion ban and the disturbing trend of draconian abortion laws that are currently sweeping the Southern states. Jones, an always welcome Weekend Update staple, brought righteous anger and frustration to her monologue, which taps into the emotions that many of us are feeling right now.

Jones came out dressed as a handmaiden, before removing her bonnet and red cape to reveal a t-shirt with “mine” written on it and an arrow pointing downward. Jones then put up a picture of the Alabama republicans who voted for the ban, describing the men as “the casting call for a Lipitor commercial” and “the mugshots of everyone arrested at a massage parlor.” Jones then declared, “you can’t control women because, I don’t know if y’all heard, but women are the same as humans.”

Jones went on to skewer the senators in an incisive and powerful rant that also took on Alabama’s female governor Kay Ivey, who signed the bill into law. She then stated what we all know to be true: “when women have a choice, women have freedom,” which was met with cheers and applause by the audience.

If you’re a woman (or a person who loves women) then you’ve experienced a roller coaster of emotions this past week. You only need to listen to the folks around you (or on Twitter) and see that many of us are struggling with anger, frustration, fear, and hopelessness. We’re upset because these bans are all building towards one devastating threat: the overturn of Roe v. Wade. This is why we cried on election night in 2016. This is why we were devastated by the confirmations of Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. We knew this was coming, and now our very personhood is under threat.

This fear is what made Jones’s rant such a cathartic release. Because finally someone with a platform is embodying our anger and fear with comedy and clarity. Jones did not mince words in her declaration, and she didn’t tiptoe around it with political jargon. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how powerful a nakedly angry woman speaking the truth really is.

And despite the disturbing events of the past week, Jones ended her rant on a note of optimism and support. “And if you’re a woman out there, and you feel scared or confused, just know that you’re not alone. There’s so many women out there that got your back, especially me, Leslie ‘Dracarys That Bitch’ Jones. You can’t tell me what to do with my body. You can’t make me small or put me in a box. I’m 6 feet tall and 233 pounds. Ain’t no box big enough to hold me.”

Thanks Leslie Jones, for giving voice to our emotions and for sharing a wickedly funny message of hope.

Things We Saw Today: 1 Million People Signed the Petition to Remake Game of Thrones, Have No Idea How Television Works

Conleth Hill, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Emilia Clarke in Game of Thrones (2011)

After 8 years and 72 episodes, HBO’s epic fantasy series Game of Thrones ends its run tonight. But plenty of fans not only want the series to continue, but want to retcon the entire eighth season. A petition on Change.org to rewrite and reshoot the entire season without creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss has received over 1 million signatures.

As someone who was left bitterly disappointed by last week’s episode, I get the anger. Really, I do. But this petition is dumb as hell. First off, whoever created it and those who have signed it have zero clue how the entertainment industry works. Do you really think that HBO is going to just cast off the hundreds of millions of dollars they spent to make season eight to tailor it to your tastes?

That would require the rights from George R.R. Martin, permission from Benioff and Weiss, not to mention re-signing the sprawling cast (whom have all committed to new projects) to essentially redo the job they just did. This has zero precedent for any series or film, let alone one as globally successful as Game of Thrones. It’s never going to happen.

Secondly, the sheer audacity of the request is insulting to the writers, creators, cast, and crew that brought this series to life. All it takes is one redesign of Sonic the Hedgehog and people think they’re entitled to demand changes to all of film and television. Art is made to be criticized, not custom ordered. That’s what fan fiction is for.

With social media, fans now have direct access to creators and cast. But with that access comes an unearned sense of entitlement. It’s absurd, and frankly embarrassing to see fandoms demand changes to intellectual property and work that they have neither bankrolled nor created. It’s the same ridiculous sense of ownership that had fans complaining to Markus and McFeely about Endgame not fulfilling their Stucky fantasies. Again, that’s what fan fiction is for.

Dylan, who created the petition, said in an update “I didn’t make this petition to be an entitled, whiny fan, I made it because I was immensely disappointed and needed to vent. Do I have a solution? I’ve got plenty of ideas, but no, I’m not a Hollywood writer. But you don’t need to be a mechanic to know your car is broken.” Dylan may not see himself as entitled, but I guarantee you that many of the folks who signed this honestly think this petition is going to change someone’s mind. And that is bananas.

Did I like the final season of Game of Thrones? Sure didn’t. Do I reserve the right to bitch about it online? 100 percent. But do I think that I’m in any way entitled for a do-over according to my specifications? Hell no. In conclusion, I’m glad this show is finally ending, so we can all move on with our lives.

‘Gorka has pleaded with Strictly producers to put him with a northern-based star so he can be close to home,’ an insider told The Sun.

‘By the time the show is on, Gemma will have given birth to their baby and he doesn’t want to be too far from them.

‘Strictly professionals are required to base themselves from Monday to Friday in the area where their celebrity lives.

‘Obviously, if he’s in the south or another far-flung location, it will be struggle to get back to them both.’

Gemma and Gorka met on Strictly in 2017, before going public with their romance in February 2018. They have since moved in together in Bury, Greater Manchester, where the former Hollyoaks star was born, and are expecting their first child together this summer.

Earlier this week, Gemma revealed she was rushed to A&E last month and has since been diagnosed with her FOURTH kidney infection.

9 Months Pregnant Teen Killed & Baby Cut From Womb After Being Lured by Strangers Donating Baby Items

A 19-year-old Chicago woman who was nine months pregnant lured to a home with promises of free baby items was killed and had her baby cut out of her womb by a mother-daughter pair who prosecutors say planned the sadistic attack for months.

46-year-old Clarisa Figueroa and her 24-year-old daughter Desiree were both charged with first-degree murder in the death of Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, Chicago police announced during a news conference Thursday (May 16).

A third person, 40-year-old Piotr Bobak, Clarisa Figueroa’s boyfriend, was charged with concealment of a homicide. The Figueroas and Bobak were arrested on Tuesday (May 14).

Police said the Figueroa women lured Ochoa-Lopez to their home promising to donate a stroller, baby clothes and other baby items for her unborn child.

According to police, the women used a coaxial cable to strangle Ochoa-Lopez to death before using a butcher knife to cut her open and take her baby out on April 23rd.

Ochoa-Lopez’s decomposing body was found three weeks later with the cord still around her neck, police said.

The Associated Press has all of the details about this heinous crime:

Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, 19, was lured to the home where Clarisa Figueroa lived with her daughter, Desiree, by Facebook postings offering free baby clothes. When she arrived, the daughter showed her a photo album of her late brother to distract her as her mother started trying to strangle her with a cord, prosecutor Jim Murphy said.

When Ochoa-Lopez managed to get her fingers under the cord, Clarisa Figueroa yelled at her 24-year-old daughter — “You’re not doing your f***ing job!” The daughter then pried Ochoa-Lopez’s fingers from the cord “one by one” while her mother continued to strangle the teen for another five minutes, Murphy said.

Once Ochoa-Lopez showed no signs of life, Clarisa Figueroa cut her open with a butcher’s knife, removed the placenta and the baby, then put the baby in a bucket with the umbilical cord still attached, said Murphy, reading from court documents.

The plot may have originated in late 2018, when Clarisa Figueroa told her family she was pregnant and later posted on Facebook an ultrasound and photos of a room decorated for a baby. Desiree Figueroa was surprised, Murphy said, because her mother had previously had her fallopian tubes tied to prevent pregnancy.

Prosecutors highlighted that Clarisa Figueroa made the announcement about being pregnant not long after one of her adult sons had died of natural causes.

Clarisa Figueroa connected with Ochoa-Lopez on March 5 via a Facebook page for pregnant women. “Who is due in May?” Clarisa Figueroa asked in one message. “Where is the May mammas at?” Ochoa-Lopez, seven months’ pregnant at the time, responded, and Clarisa Figueroa made the offer of free clothes, prosecutors said.

When Clarisa Figueroa first asked her daughter to help her kill someone to get a baby, the daughter initially said no, Murphy said. He also revealed publicly for the first time that Desiree Figueroa is four months’ pregnant.

They first met with Ochoa-Lopez around April 1, though she left unharmed that day. Desiree Figueroa had told her boyfriend about her mother’s intention to kill Ochoa-Lopez, and he warned her he would call police if they harmed the young woman. The prosecutor said Clarisa Figueroa later told the boyfriend the whole scheme had been an April Fool’s joke.

Ochoa-Lopez was killed when she returned a second time on April 23. After killing her, the mother and daughter allegedly wrapped her in a blanket and put the body into a large plastic bag. They then dragged it outside and placed it in a garbage can in a hidden area next to their garage on Chicago’s Southwest Side, about 4 miles from Ochoa-Lopez’s own home, according to authorities.

Clarisa Figueroa then called 911, claiming that she had just delivered her own newborn baby and that it was not breathing, authorities said. When first responders arrived, the child was blue. They tried to resuscitate the infant and transported Clarisa Figueroa and the boy to a nearby hospital.

When she went to the hospital, doctors who examined her found “no signs consistent with a woman who had just delivered a baby.” She also had blood on her arms, hands and face that authorities later determined was from Ochoa-Lopez, prosecutors said.

It was not clear whether the hospital contacted police. In a statement issued Friday, Christ Medical Center in suburban Oak Lawn declined to comment, citing federal and state regulations. Oak Lawn police said they were not contacted about Figueroa by the medical center or any other agency, including the Chicago Police Department.

A Cook County judge denied bond to the Figueroas, saying that she felt “the presumption is great” that the women committed a “heinous and brutal murder” and that they pose “a real and present” danger to the community. Bond was also denied to the elder Figueroa’s boyfriend.

Marlen Ochoa-Lopez’s mother, Raquel Uriostegui, said her daughter was born in Mexico, but has been in the United States since she was just two years old.

“My daughter was a very joyful girl. She had a lot of dreams,” Uriostegui said.

“She wanted to do great things, like all of us,” Marlen’s husband, Yiovanni Lopez, added.

As for the baby, who was named Yovani Yadiel Lopez, he remained in the hospital Friday (May 17) in grave condition and wasn’t expected to survive, police said.
