Disney has just dropped a new featurette trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story which features the director Ron Howard and the members of the cast discussing the world of the standalone prequel. “The Star Wars universe that we see in Solo was different from anything else we’ve seen in any previous Star Wars movies,” says Howard. “The Empire controls everything. Everyone is struggling to survive but we discover this incredible free spirit.”
The trailer shows a grimy, gritty underworld more reminiscent of Blade Runner and Minority Report than the picturesque vistas of the Star Wars trilogies. We see Solo riding through the streets in a cruiser, playing cards with Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) and flirting with Qi’Ra (Emilia Clarke). There’s intense scenes of battle, as well as Han and Chewie leaping onto a moving train.
Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, says of Solo, “He’s the most excitng character in the saga for me, you don’t know what he’s going to do. He’s reckless.” Kasdan co-wrote the script with his son Jonathan Kasdan (In the Land of Women).
Solo has been rumoured to have been a tumultuous shoot, with Ron Howard coming aboard mid-shoot after co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie) were dropped from the film. Despite the drama surrounding production, Howard’s enthusiasm is infectious as he talks about building in the defining moments of Han Solo’s life. “Those first encounters with Chewbacca, with the Millennium Falcon, with Lando Calrissian — they’re in this movie!” Howard says.
Check out the trailer below. Solo: A Star Wars Story opens on May 25th in theaters and will debut at the Cannes Film Festival.
