Okay so Maybe Chris Evans Isn’t Done Playing Captain America After All?

It’s been a long day of the Russo brothers saying things and toying with our emotional wellbeing, and it just got worse. Director Joe Russo stated that Chris Evans isn’t “done yet.” I have to go lie down.

Russo was speaking with Entertainment Tonight Canada when he made a comment that sent shockwaves of speculation through the legions of nerd press who are desperate for something to say about Avengers 4 (I number amongst them). Without a trailer or even a film title to keep us warm at night, we must dissect the Russos’ every voiced syllable. Regarding Chris Evans, per E! Online:

“I think it was more emotional for him than us only because he’s not done yet,” Joe Russo shared with ET Canada. “And I won’t explain what that means but the audience will soon understand what I’m talking about.”

This cryptic remark has prompted a lot of coverage about whether Evans—and thus his character Steve Rogers—will indeed be exiting the MCU post-Avengers 4, as is generally expected. I was surprised Steve made it through Infinity War, and Evans has been pretty vocal about hanging up his shield. On Twitter, he announced his final day on the Avengers 4 set thusly:

“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”

“Thank you for the memories” would rather strongly imply that Evans is finished making memories about Steve Rogers, no?

I suspect that Joe Russo is toying with us here, as is his wont. What he says doesn’t even make sense—why would Evans be more emotional about wrapping the movie if he isn’t done playing Cap yet?

While Russo does say of Evans that “he’s not done yet,” there’s no need to take this statement at face value. “I won’t explain what that means” means that he’s misleading us in some fashion, and it’s all either nonsense or it’s in regards to a twist in Avengers 4: Title Unknown that we will never know about until the movie’s debut in May. That’s not “soon,” Joe.

Maybe in a desperate attempt to save Cap, Tony Stark downloads his brain into his AI system and Chris Evans will voice Iron Man’s navigational system for decades to come! Maybe he “isn’t done yet” because he’s passed on the shield and the spirit of Captain America lives on! Maybe Marvel had second thoughts about letting Chris Evans go and gave him many more millions of dollars to stay! Maybe this is all a red herring to distract us from the fact that the trailer still has not dropped even though it has been seventeen thousand years since Infinity War! Your guess is as good as mine.

Why do you think that Joe Russo is tormenting us in this fashion?
