DJ Mustard Says It Was Him, Not Ella Mai, Who Removed Jacquees’ “Trip” Remix From YouTube & Soundcloud

DJ Mustard is letting it be known that he was the one who had Jacquees’ viral cover of Ella Mai’s newest hit single “Trip” removed from the internet.

Jacquees, who is known for his “Quemixes,” decided to put his own spin to Ella Mai’s “Trip” and even shot and released a video for the song before she had a chance to.

Ella’s video was uploaded to YouTube last week (Tuesday, September 18th to be exact) and since then, Jacquees’ version has been scrubbed from the web.

Fans on social media started dragging Ella after news spread that she reportedly had Jacquees’ version of the song deleted and allegedly planned to sue him.

But, none of that was true, according to DJ Mustard, and he has since come to the defense of Ella—who is signed to his 10 Summers record label—after folks accused Ella of forcing Jacquees to delete his “Trip” cover/remix from YouTube and Soundcloud because his version had more hits than hers.

In response to the speculation, DJ Mustard decided to set the record straight once and for all because he’s “tired of people picking on” Ella Mai.

“Our artists don’t send cease and desists, we do,” the producer wrote in a Twitter post. “When you monetize content you don’t own you are stealing and no one steals from 10 Summers. Ella had no say in the matter and any platform reporting differently is spreading falsities.”

Jacquees’ team has also responded to the drama with their own statement (via Billboard), confirming that there is no beef between the two artists.

“For the new people who are just catching up to who Jacquees is as an artist, this has become very controversial for no reason,” reads the statement. “We love Ella and are cool with her team as well. He has been releasing not only Quemix songs but entire projects with remixes of other artists’ songs ranging back to 2013. This was an act of genuine support and should not turn into negativity for either of the artist or from their supporters.”

Jacquees also hopes that he and Ella Mai can work on an official collaboration in the near future.

“There is still hope for the song as an official remix or maybe fans will get something better that is an original collaboration,” the statement added.

Jesse Williams Apologizes for Controversial Emmett Till Meme

Jesse Williams faced a lot of backlash on social media after using Emmett Till’s mother in a meme to promote his directorial debut in the upcoming movie Till, a film version of the 2005 documentary “The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till” by Keith A. Beauchamp.

The meme parodied Colin Kaepernick’s Nike “Just Do It” ad campaign, using the same “believing in something, even if it means sacrificing everything” format placed on top of pictures featuring Mamie Till-Mobley sobbing over her son Emmett’s casket.

Williams quickly removed the memes after receiving backlash on Twitter and has since apologized for them in a lengthy statement he screenshotted and posted on the popular social media site.

“As much as I’d like to address what my intentions were and the meaning of those images,” Williams said, “it’s more important that I first acknowledge that I seem to have offended and possibly hurt some of the very people I aim to uplift.”

You can read Jesse Williams’ apology in its entirety below:

Peace family,

I posted a few images as art in support of the announcement of my upcoming film TiLL, that provoked a strong reaction. While some clearly understood my intention and it’s connection to Mamie’s real life, many didn’t. As much as I’d like to address what my intentions were and the meaning of those images, it’s more important that I first acknowledge that I seem to have offended and possibly hurt some of the very people I aim to uplift.

I would absolutely never make light of the tremendous tragedy that foisted Mamie Till Mobley into her life of activism and could never pretend her child being brutally tortured and executed was her “sacrifice.” That doesn’t even kinda make sense, never mind being absurd and ahistorical.

The images were designed to highlight the tremendous sacrifices Mamie made by sharing her unrelenting journey for justice—including boldly sharing those iconic images from her son’s funeral, which changed the world. I adopted an iconic contemporary visual framework to connect past to present and contextualize our language around loss, leadership and sacrifice. My intent aside, I take responsibility for how they were received.

My heart is always with my people and this includes my artistic commitment to telling our stories. Always have, always will. And while I stand for creative expression, every swing ain’t gonna be a home run. (And y’all know I swing a lot.) Those who are sincere in this work and concern, I thank you.

Review: Summer ’03 Is A Messy, Heartfelt Exploration of Growing Up And Coming Of Age

Summer 03 stars Joey King

Summer ’03, from writer/director Becca Gleason, is not perfect, but for a debut feature, it presents a case for her having a distinctive and powerful voice worth listening to. The story of Jaime (Joey King) and her family’s week from hell is in turn hilarious and painful, absurd yet familiar. And while there will be certain elements that will divide audiences, it’s worth a watch if only to see Gleason showcase her talents and innate understanding of what it means to be a teenage girl. Minor plot spoilers follow.

The story starts with the death of Jamie’s grandmother (June Squibb), who shuffles off her mortal coil after imparting a few disturbing truths to her family. For Jamie, it’s the fact that she was baptized secretly, and also that she needs to learn how to give blowjob to be prepared for the world. For other family members, it alternates between some terrible family secrets and some harsh criticism, which leave the entire clan reeling. In the week leading up to the funeral, the family must contend with the truths left behind.

For Jamie, who’s left to deal with two massively complicated topics (sex and religion), it comes to ahead in the form of Luke (Jack Kilmer), who’s a week away from becoming a priest. Teenaged Jamie is drawn to him and the two develop a taboo relationship, which doesn’t quite go the way you think while still making my skin crawl a little.

For those of you who read that section and immediately threw up a red flag, don’t worry: the power imbalance and general creepiness of that gets called out at multiple points during the film, especially by Shira (Andrea Savage), Jamie’s mother who’s contending with problems of her own. Shira, despite being the mother in a teen coming-of-age drama, is not the antagonist here. Following the death of a mother-in-law who hated her (and was incredibly anti-Semitic) and her husband’s reaction to the death, Shira is working through issues of her own in a not-so-healthy fashion, as well as trying to make sure her daughter is okay.

There are a whole host of familiar characters, such as the sexually experience best friend Emily (Kelly Lamor Wilson), and the guy friend with a crush March (Stephen Ruffin, effortlessly likable) who’s trying to discover himself. What’s refreshing about these characters is that they don’t behave in the way we expect them to behave. Emily is never shamed for being a sexual being. March doesn’t get the girl through being a nice guy, even though he is a genuinely good guy. They don’t just accept Jamie’s grief and ensuing bad behavior either; at one point towards the climax of the film, Emily tells Jamie that just because her grandma died “doesn’t mean you have permission to be a b—h.”

Jamie herself is a messy, complex, downright unlikeable character at times. She cusses. She’s sexually active. She behaves abominably and then owns up to her mistakes. She is afforded the messiness that male characters are given in coming of age films, and King delivers her best performance of the year in the role, making Jamie seem even more real and relatable. Also, her obsession with the Harry Potter books hit way too close to home; I’m pretty sure I’ve also bemoaned how you can never trust a guy who doesn’t like Harry Potter before.

Of course, we can’t talk about this film without discussing the absolutely unsexy way that it deals with sex. There is no male gaze here. Instead, sex is presented as being this awkward, odd thing that is both terrifying and fascinating to Jamie. Gleason is masterful in how she presents Jamie’s sexual awakening as not being something tantalizing or for the enjoyment of the male audience, but rather as something that’s a little bit uncomfortable for the audience to be intruding on.

Audiences will be divided on some parts of the story, especially the romantic plot between Jamie and Luke, but for Gleason’s talents alone as a storyteller and director, it’s worth giving the film a shot. For a debut film, it has a strong voice and clear visual style, and I personally feel that she has a very bright filmmaking future ahead of her. The film is currently out in Los Angeles and New York City, and will be rolling out nationally over the coming weeks.

Things We Saw Today: Samantha Bee Has The Answer To This Awful Week

Full Frontal With Samantha Bee promo image

I think we can all agree that it’s been a terrible week for literally everyone. Luckily, Samantha Bee has some good advice for all of us feeling overwhelming pain and rage.

“It’s Friday, Sep. 28, and I don’t have a show tonight, but yesterday a bunch of super-powerful white dudes stood up and yelled at rape survivors for messing up their schedules so I needed to either yell into a camera or eat an entire confetti cake. Honestly, I choose both,” Bee said in a video she posted online of herself in a bathrobe eating confetti cake (some of the cake was thrown at a cutout of Lindsay Graham). She raged about the “shriveled old scrotums” in Congress and the lack of respect for women they possess.

And yeah, it’s fitting. It’s not the Tina Fey sheet-caking disaster, it’s a very real moment of rage because who doesn’t currently want to hurl cake at Republicans? Who isn’t feeling terrified and furious as the good ol’ boys club gets away with their usual terrible behavior? Every woman deserves their own cake (or dessert of choice) this week.

But Bee ended on a more hopeful note, reminding us of what happened after Anita Hill’s testimony in 1991: “an unprecedented number of women were swept into office, thanks to a massive wave of female rage.” Bee says she is sure that this is what will happen during the coming midterm elections. “And then maybe we’ll power the eastern seaboard for a while,” she concludes. “Pretty sure we’ll have some rage left over.”

In Today’s Terrible Celebrity News, Lindsay Lohan Verbally Harasses Homeless Family On Instagram Live

Lindsay Lohan stars in Mean Girls

In case you weren’t already frustrated with Lindsay Lohan and her terrible comments about #MeToo and Harvey Weinstein, now we have even more reason to be done with her as she harassed and stalked a family of Syrian refugees through Moscow. Sadly, this is very real. There’s video evidence, because someone was smart enough to record her Instagram livestream of the harassment and put it up on YouTube.

Lohan opens the video by saying ““Hey everyone, I just want to show you a family that I met. They’re a Syrian refugee family that I’m really worried about. They really need help.” Right off the bat, she comes across as condescending, trying to show off how kind she is the world via social media and exploiting a homeless family. And when they aren’t interested in engaging with her or accepting her help, she quickly turns sour.

“I won’t leave until I take you. Now I know who you are. Don’t f–k with me,” she tells the family after they reject her offer to take the two children with her; she also says “If someone is offering them a home and a bed, which is me at the moment, give it to them.” She adopts a Middle Eastern accent, telling them “don’t f–k with Pakistan,” and accuses them of human trafficking and “ruining Arab culture.” At this point in time, it would be easy to believe it’s clickbait, except for the fact we have hard, cold proof that she actually behaved in such a terrible, offensive fashion.

Eventually, the family tries to leave and Lohan follows them, only stoping when the mother pushes her down. The next video shows her crying and talking about how scared she is, as if she didn’t just frighten a mother into acting in self defense. Thankfully, that’s the end of this horrible saga.

First off, Lohan is done. Over. Cancelled. There is literally no excuse for her behavior whatsoever. Regardless of her good intentions, she approached this family to use them to gain points on social media and when they didn’t immediately fall for her act, she became aggressive and harassed them. She literally stalked them through the streets. No wonder the mother acted the way she did; if someone was trying to take my children away from me and threatening me, I’d push her too.

Also, if you were one of the many commentators on the video expressing support for Lohan (which we also can see in the video), you are part of the problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re the number one fan of someone, seeing them behave like this is inexcusable, as is cheering them on. Lohan wasn’t about to listen to anyone, but the fact that people are telling hater to stop as she’s behaving in such a manner pretty much makes them complicit in her behavior. If you see something like that, especially if you’re safely on the other side of a screen, you should probably stand up and say something to stop it.

This week has been a hellish trashfire of a week, and this is just another example of why the world probably needs to stop for a while. Seriously. Also, Lohan’s career sort of needs to be over now. At least, we can all stop remembering her turns in The Parent Trap and Mean Girls fondly, because she’s just a bad person. Just like fetch, we can stop trying to make her happen.

Tiffany Haddish Wants To Play Nubia In Wonder Woman, So DC, Give Her A Call

tiffany haddish lego movie sequel

Look, DC, I know I’ve been making a lot of demands of you recently, but this is one you definitely need to be listening to. Tiffany Haddish, in a recent interview, has expressed interest in playing Wonder Woman’s sister Nubia on the big screen, and this is something that absolutely needs to happen. Someone get Patty Jenkins on the phone as of yesterday.

Haddish told IndieWire: “I would love to do Mystery Girl, or play Wonder Woman’s sister, ’cause she has a sister. In the 1978 issue of ‘Wonder Woman,’ she has a sister named Nubia. She has a black sister. Only person that could kill her. They don’t tell you that though, too much. Me and Gal Gadot. That would be sold out.”

A quick Google search for those unfamiliar with the character turns up a huge amount of information on why Nubia is completely kickass. The fantastic Mic article ‘Nubia Is The Twin Sister Of Wonder Woman — And She Is Literally A Black Queen” by Princess-India Alexander sums it up best by saying that Nubia is not Diana’s foil but her equal. She gets some pretty cool powers — the Gorgons literally bless her with the Cold Sight which can turn people to stone — and she’s got a nice backstory from the pre-Crisis timeline to dive into. Stolen by the god Mars when she was a baby, Nubia was trained to be a weapon of destruction, but during an attack on Themiscyra Diana helps her break free from Mars’s mind control and the two save the day.

That backstory, though it no longer exists in DC’s comics canon, could make for an interesting arc in the third Wonder Woman movie (c’mon, we all know they’re going to make one). We don’t have Mars in the DCEU, but we did have Ares in the first Wonder Woman. It would be an easy retcon to introduce Nubia as Hippolyta’s kidnapped daughter, giving another layer to why Hippolyta did not want Diana getting involved in any sort of fight with Ares. Nubia could start the film seeking revenge for the man she thinks is her family, only to realize her true place in the world. Plus, if they wanted to wrap up the Gal Gadot-led films, having Nubia there would be a great way to pass on the mantle and give us more Wonder Woman with Nubia as the title character.

Haddish would be a genius choice to play Nubia. Known for her comedic talents, she got her start on the drama If Loving You Is Wrong. Good comedy is difficult and requires massive amounts of talent, so if Haddish can steal every scene she’s in in films like Girls Trip, then she is ready to take on dramatic roles as well to show her range to a wider audience. She’s also shown she can hold her own against any scene partner, proving she and Gadot would be more than well-matched to trade banter and blows.

Haddish is also no stranger to comic book dramas, as she is currently in production on the DC/Vertigo adaption The Kitchen, alongside Melissa McCarthy and Elisabeth Moss. The film follows three women who take over their husbands’ criminal empires and find they have a taste for the fast life. Haddish is playing Ruby O’Carroll, a “woman willing to kill anyone in the way of her plan.” The film is set for release next year, showcasing Haddish’s dramatic skills (and probably action skills as well) right around the time DC will probably be starting to think about a third Wonder Woman movie. The timing couldn’t be more perfect.

Haddish also expressed an interest in playing DC’s Mystery Girl, so if Nubia doesn’t pan out then there’s still a chance to see her shine as the headliner of her own superhero film. Still, I’m hoping that the stars align and she ends up co-starring along Gadot. Seriously, DC, give her a call.

Kathleen Kennedy Renews Her Contract, Sticks It To Haters

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy

Despite rumors and “very reliable reports” that exist only on Reddit, Kathleen Kennedy is not going anywhere. The Hollywood Reporter announced that she has extended her contract with Lucasfilm for another three years, through 2021. Kennedy is responsible for steering the franchise back into the public eye and turning out four new films that catapulted Lucasfilm to mass financial success. Disney purchased Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012; since then, the films have grossed $4.5 billion worldwide, and as the franchise is just getting started, it is only up from here.

The article makes mention of the rough spots that the company has hit along the way: Rogue One‘s reshoots, the firings of Lord and Miller as well as Colin Trevorrow, and the social media divide over The Last Jedi. It’s important to note that despite Solo underperforming at the box office (by the standards set by the previous films), the other three films saw huge box office returns and critical acclaim. The Force Awakens literally gave birth to a new wave of affection for a franchise that most people had moved away from in the ten years since Revenge of the Sith. Rey is a pop culture icon thanks to Kennedy’s new films. It’s hardly cause for the constant remarks about the sometimes troubled waters that Kennedy has navigated.

As I’ve written about before, there are legitimate reasons to critique Kennedy’s tenure at Lucasfilm, mostly involving her commitment to diversity on and off screen. But with her contract extended, there is time for her to course correct some of those mistakes, especially the lack of women behind the camera on her films and television shows. However, the tendency to blame her for all of Lucasfilm’s missteps is a little much, and something we don’t see with male studio heads.

Marvel has had several high profile directors turn down or walk off of projects for them, as well as several critical and commercial misfires, yet Kevin Feige isn’t facing calls to retire. Running a studio is a hell of a stressful position. Rogue One was a success, and it might have been Kennedy’s decision to authorize reshoots that saved it from being a failure. The Force Awakens went through script rewrites during production, and rang in high box office returns. Yes, The Last Jedi has some pretty big detractors. It also made a great deal of money. And firing Colin Treveorrow? That was a smart move before they let him write a scene in which Rey runs away from the Knights of Ren in high heels.

The only “misfire” is Solo, and that might be due in part to Bob Iger’s decision to roll out multiple Star Wars films in as quick a succession as possible, as well as the choice to center it on a story that really did not need to be told. The production of Solo would have been disastrous for any major studio, and while Kennedy is partially to blame, but that does not mean that she needs to be fired or to retire.

Kennedy is a co-founder of Amblin Entertainment along with Steven Spielberg. Her producing credits include E.T., Jurassic Park, and Schindler’s List, among others. This November, she’ll be receiving an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Irving G. Thalberg Award for her consistently high quality body of work over the years, along with her husband and fellow producer Frank Marshall. This is not someone who has no idea what she’s doing. Kennedy is one of Hollywood’s most respected producers, and the fact that many articles trot out any turbulence every time she is brought up is a bit disheartening. She helped bring one of our most beloved stories back to life; she deserves more than angry YouTubers screaming for her head.

And as I said above, there is room for growth. Hire more actresses of color (and then don’t kill off their characters). Hire more writers and directors of different backgrounds. Continue to fight for representation in front of and behind the camera. As one of the most powerful women in Hollywood, she can kickstart the careers of so many talented artist who might not get that chance. If, three years from now, the films are still dominated by white men behind the camera and most of the heroines are still white women, we can talk about finding a replacement. Until then, let’s stop using Solo as a way to undermine her every time we talk about her, okay?

Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and North West out in New York, 15 June 2018

Ever since Kim Kardashian and Kanye West tied the knot in 2014, split rumours have been swirling.

Most recently, rapper Kanye, 41, revealed he was moving to Chicago, however, sources claimed that Kim wouldn’t be following her husband – who she shares daughters North, five, and eight-month-old Chicago, and son Saint, two, with.

And now, Kim has hinted at issues in their relationship, revealing she didn’t know if they would last when she got pregnant with North in 2012, just months after they went public with their relationship.

The 37-year-old made the revelation during a preview for this Sunday’s Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

‘When I got pregnant with North, I had no idea if Kanye [West] and I were going to end up together,’ she said.

The idea that they could split led Kim to think of a bizarre contingency plan, as she added: ‘I was like: “We can break up, but let me just at least have some sperm so I can have another one,” so I could have siblings.’

The reality TV star  then  she hinted at plans for a fourth child, as she justified her point to her pal Larsa Pippen.

‘I mean, I would want all my four kids with the same person,’ she said.

It comes after reports that the couple – who welcomed daughter Chicago via surrogate in January – were planning to have their ‘last embryo’, which is believed to be male, implanted into a gestational carrier ‘soon.’

Although Kim shut down the rumours in August, she has previously spoken about wanting to expand her brood.

During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan in May,  she said: I would have maybe one more. I would maybe try for one more. I really, really enjoyed the surrogacy process.’

And this summer, she suggested that she could change her mind on wanting a fourth child, saying: ‘We start filming season 16 next week, so if I think about it more and it’s gonna happen, you’ll definitely see it on the show.’

So, could baby number four be on the horizon for the Kardashian-Wests?

Hi, Gabby! How are you finding life after CBB?

A lot more relaxed. I was in there for less than half the time of Love Island, but it was really intense.

What made it difficult?

I wasn’t around a lot of people who were my
age or anyone I got

It was still amazing,

Yeah. We have a WhatsApp group, but there’s probably going to be some people I speak to more than others.

Yeah. He asked me to be his girlfriend a few days ago and I got a bit nervous. He’s really good at talking – it’s the songwriter in him – whereas I don’t know what to say. I was like, ‘Does this mean I have a boyfriend?’ and he said, ‘Do you want it to mean that?’ [Smiles]

How did you meet?

On social media. [Laughs] He slid into my DMs with a picture
I had posted of myself and was like, ‘Too much sauce’ whatever that means! I sent back a funny meme and we’ve been seeing each other since then.

You’ve already met his family – has he met yours?

I was really nervous to meet them, but they were lovely!
He’s met my mum and brother, and he and my mum have been texting. I’m like, ‘Guys, have
you got something to tell me?’ but she just loves him!

What’s next for you two?

We’re definitely going to spend Christmas together! He said to me, ‘We’re spending Christmas together, you do know that?’
and I was like ‘OK!’

How was Olivia Buckland’s wedding? Was it a great day?
